Ladakh plus Zanskar and Kashmir
Some of the best trekking in the Himalaya can be found in far northern India, the parts that border on Tibet . To the west of Nepal, Lhe Ladakh, Zanskar and Kashmir. Recently, because of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, it has become safe to travel in Kashmir.

Ladakh, meaning the land of high passes, is often called Little Tibet,because Contact Me the landscape and culture are so similar to that of its neighbor. The ancient capital city of Leh features modern conveniences along with labyrinths of alleyways, shops and houses. Many activities can be arranged for you in Ladakh including white water rafting, camel safaris, mountaineering, tours to monasteries and gompas, and of course, trekking. Treks generally range from one to two weeks, altitudes up to 15,000 feet and involve camping with your gear being carried by a packhorse.

Additional treks at higher altitudes can be made to remote Zanskar, west of Ladakh. These are camping treks with packhorses. There are few amenities in Zanskar and the treks are hard with many difficult river crossings.

Kashmir has not had many visitors for the past fifteen years because of political violence. I hope that it has ended and tourism will start again as it is one of the most beautiful places in India. The summer capital of Kashmir, Sirinagar, is situated on magical Dal Lake. Every morning when the sun rises, small boats arrive to form a floating market. You can even rent a houseboat and stay on the lake. There are many day trips and hikes to take from Sirinagar.

The cost of these trips averages about $120 per day and includes guide, local transportation, hotel accommodations, food, packhorses and camping equipment. It does not include airfare to the area or alcoholic beverages.

Sikkim and Darjeeling
Sikkim forms the eastern boundary of Nepal. It is the narrow strip of land that separates Nepal and Bhutan and touches the southern border of Tibet. Many towns and cities in Sikkim are worth visiting, have interesting short hikes and scenery. While there are the usual long and short treks that can be arranged, one of the most interesting treks is aptly named the Monastic Trek as it allows you to visit some of Sikkim's most important Buddhist monasteries.

We all know Darjeeling for its tea. Located to the south of Sikkim offers a view of colonial India with tea plantations and English-style houses. In addition to beautiful scenery, the area offers short day hikes, white water rafting and trekking.
